IRC log of #schooltool for Thursday, 2006-03-16

pcarduneI've got something really strange hapening.  When I run a zope server locally, and browse to the servers using firefox, i see no images, if I use konqueror i see pictures.  If I am view remote zope servers, i see pictures with both.  If I view anything not zope with firefox, i see images.00:00
pcardunethat sounds really confusing00:01
pcardunefirefox isn't displaying images from things running *locally* on zope 3 servers (schooltool and z3 instance)00:01

vmxanyone awake? ;)06:10
th1aI am.06:10
th1aOut here in on the West Coast.06:11
vmxi tried to install schoolbell in debian testing. i can't connect to the server. what could be wrong?06:12
vmxi tried http://myhost:7180/06:12
vmxit's "oma" in my case06:12
vmxerror.log says:06:13
vmx2006-03-16 05:07:49,748 zope.server.http (HTTP) started.06:13
vmx        Hostname: oma06:13
vmx        Port: 718006:13
th1aDid you try http://localhost:718006:14
th1aThis is on Ubuntu?06:16
vmxno debian testing (etch)06:16
th1aBut using the Debian package?06:17
vmxyes, "apt-get install schoolbell"06:17
vmxthe debian readme says:06:18
vmx  1. `apt-get install schoolbell`06:18
vmx  2. Open http://localhost:7180/ in a web browser and play with the web06:18
vmx     frontend.06:18
vmxi'll try to reinstall it06:18
th1asudo /etc/init.d/schoolbell restart'06:18
vmxi tried that already06:18
vmxit didn't help06:19
th1aIf you look at ps does it appear to be running?06:19
vmxgood point, i just have to wait until it is installed again06:19
th1aDo you have a firewall running?06:20
vmxno. i i think i found the problem06:20
vmxi get: Starting SchoolBell...Warning: font '/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/timesbd.ttf' does not exist.06:20
vmxPDF support disabled.06:20
vmxi thought this warning doesn't matter, but it doesn't start up then06:21
th1aWell, that's just a warning.06:21
th1aSo it doesn't appear to be running at all?06:21
vmxno. what's the name of the process? i tried a ps aux|grep school06:22
vmxthe mscorefonts have different names on my system06:22
th1aI'm not sure what the process would be called.06:22
vmxhm it still doesn't start up (it says so, but it isn't running)06:27
th1aI can't remember offhand where the main server executable is.06:29
th1aBut the next thing I'd do is find that and start it by hand.06:29
th1aThat should give you a clearer error message.06:29
vmxhm it works :)06:31
vmxthe ini-script seems to be broken06:31
vmxproblem found06:42
vmxdebian wants to start the schoolbell as daemon as user "schoolbell". but there seem to be problems with zope. it works if you start it as user "root"06:43
*** tiredbones has joined #schooltool06:48
vmxok it only occuris if you set a port for "TCP port for the RESTive HTTP interface to listen on"06:50
vmxelse it works06:50
vmxare multiple calendars only available in schooltool, or also in schoolbell?06:58
vmxtime to get some sleep. g'night07:04

th1aHi vmx.17:58
faassenth1a: hey.18:03
th1aLet's see if I can do a commit over this crappy wireless connection...18:03
th1ahi faassen.18:03
th1aSorry about yesterday.  Hope I didn't leave you sitting by the phone twiddling your thumbs.18:03
th1aOverall, the meeting yesterday went pretty well.18:04
povbot`/svn/commits: * hoffman committed revision 5807:18:04
povbot`/svn/commits: My somewhat hacky system for automating the importing of data for an individual school.  Violates DRY because it is just a slightly simplified version of the sample data package (minus randomness) but it works.  Needs better documentation.18:04
th1aI had forgotten one thing about HTH which makes testing easy.18:05
th1aTheir teams are made up of two teachers, who teach two core subjects each, and about 45 students.18:05
th1aSo we can do meaningful testing with just a few cooperative pairs of teachers.18:05
th1aSince each of those teams are fairly autonomous.18:06
faassenth1a: I was by the phone but not twiddling my thumbs. :)18:06
th1aOK.  Good.18:06
faassenth1a: okay, that's good.18:07
th1aI had forgotten that various forms of chat, webmail, etc., are often blocked at schools, which kind of screwed me up.18:07
faassenth1a: I've been slowly struggling towards something to handle demographics, but too little to show for it. Next week I should if all goes well.18:07
faassenth1a: I figured it was something like that, it wasn't a problem. :)18:07
th1aI'm going to set up the server today.18:07
th1aWhich should be connected to the internet, so we'll be able to update it ourselves.18:08
th1aWhich does make things vastly easier, I think.18:08
faassena test server for them to use?18:08
faassenyeah, that should make things quite a bit easier.18:08
*** jinty has quit IRC18:08
th1aIt will even be a real server with SCSI drives, just a recently retired one.18:09
th1aDual processors, which of course does us no good.18:09
faassenth1a: on the demographics code, I'm working in isolation from schooltool for now as I'm depending on quite a bit of new stuff (formlib, catalog, zc.table, etc) and I'm test-less and everything. I want to get it into a reasonable shape and then worry about integrating it into ST proper.18:09
faassenth1a: Dual processors isn't a complete waste. you could even set up ZEO. :)18:09
th1aThat sounds reasonable.18:09
*** jinty has joined #schooltool18:10
th1aWe'll cross that bridge later...18:10
faassenth1a: there are so many nice components in zope3 land now that can be reused these days, so I'm mostly scratching my head about how to all put them together. :)18:10
faassenth1a: but in the end it'll be better than writing reams of new code for the same functionality. :)18:10

tiredbonessrichter, is there a trunk for the messageboard example?22:34
srichterbut make sure to read the README.txt files, because it contains stepX/ dirs that are the real messageboard package22:35
vmxi think about hacking schoolbell a bit, is it easy to hack?22:37
tiredbonessrichter, I'm going to try the checkout. Keyin in the examples from my instance of book doesn't work. Something must be missing.22:37
srichtervmx: depends on what you want to do22:38
vmxe.g. i'd like to have a way to edit multiple calendars (perhaps thats already possible) and you can choose to which calendar an event should belong22:40
srichterI dunno much about the calendar stuff, so you would have to ask on the list22:40
srichtermgedmin, ignas, alga, ... are the best people to ask22:40
vmxi will just try it and see how far i can get22:41
vmxbtw: is the debian package mentainer sometimes available via irc?22:41
srichterhe is here right now; its jinty22:46

tiredbones, revision 66061 not found.22:47
srichterI can see everything via HTTP:
srichterso I dpn't understand why you get this error22:51
tiredbonessrichter, that address is what I used to doenload the code and is what I was using in me instance.22:52
srichterI know22:52
srichterit looks correct22:52
tiredbonesso I thought I would just try a checkout.22:52
*** didymo has joined #schooltool22:54
tiredboneswhat I was doing after I download the code was to copy and paste into the various directories to see if I could get it going.22:54
tiredbonessrichter, I got zxiki working, whcih means that Zope3 knows where my instance are. So I made a new instance for messageboard and set up all the directorie as per book. When I try running the test I get that ImportError to lib/python/messageboard, which means its not fining the path. Why woyuld it find the path to zwiki and not to messageboard?23:05
srichterI ahve no idea23:06
